  1. SUNRISE - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Tom O'Bedlam's Night Out and Other Strange Excursions," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley in 1985.

One of the important things an illustrator needs to learn is to make the characters he draws exhibit emotion, all of them; Love, hate, laughter, fear, madness, glee, anger, wistfulness, disappointment, satisfaction, boredom, sorrow, the whole range of emotions. There were times when I used a hand mirror to look at my face to observe the movement of my facial muscles as I tried to create the emotion I needed for a character I was drawing.

In this picture I needed to show the girl in a state of rapture, or "ecstasy". I came up with the posture you see here, in which the tilt of the body, the angle of the head, and the position of the hands and fingers were all important to showing that emotion. I added the sunburst to accentuate the feeling, and to add a bit of drama to the picture.
