Some art teachers instruct you to think of the human head as having the basic shape of a slightly elongated cube, while other teachers instruct you that the basic shape of the head is oval, like an egg.
So I decided to use an oval shape when starting to draw the head of a woman, and using an elongated cube as the beginning shape when drawing the head of a man. How's that?
It's nice that all the art teachers seem to agree that the eye-line on the human head, man and woman, is halfway between the top of the head and the bottom jaw-line.
What's important to anyone who starts out to learn how to draw and paint is to realize that all the instruction in the world, by all the best art teachers in the world, is there just to get you started. In time, if and when you become an artist, you will alter or change the rules to suit your own need to express yourself in your artwork.
