    • OUTWORLDS - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x14 size coquille board. It appears on the cover of, "Outworlds, No.28-29," a fanzine published by Bill Bowers in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Bill Bowers was one of that first group of fanzine editors who gave me a place to show my artwork, he even featured a "Fabian" page in each issue. "Fanzines" are magazines printed and financed by a "fan" of science fiction as a hobby, primarily devoted to some aspect of science fiction and fantasy. They publish articles, letters, and lots of artwork, with contributions by both fans and pros.

I often received a sample copy of a SF fanzine with a note from the publisher/editor asking me to contribute some artwork to him for a future issue. I always looked through these sample issues before deciding if I wanted to draw something for that specific editor, and early on I rarely turned them down. Having my drawings printed in those fanzines was like getting free advertising of my artwork.

With Outworlds however, it seemed that the contributors were not really fans of science fiction literature, they seemed to be "groupies" who went around the country attending SF conventions, and most of the contents of "Outworlds" had to do with their social activities which had nothing to do with science fiction. But, I liked Bill so I contributed to his fanzine until he stopped publishing after a couple of years.
