Nobody Home

  1. NOBODY HOME - A black Ink drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. This drawing appears in "Amazing," July, 1977, illustrating the story, "Nobody Home," by F.M. Busby.

Working on any kind of artwork involves the making of decisions, lots of them. Illustrating a story for a magazine starts with knowing the size of the area that my drawing will occupy on the page. It could be a double page spread, a full pager, a half pager, or a quarter pager. I also need to know if space in the drawing is needed for any kind of text. When I read the story I will have to decide what words, descriptions, and scenes to underline or bracket, so that when I'm done reading the story I can review all my underlined "notes" and make the decisions that will lead to the picture I draw or paint.

But even before I draw the picture I have to decide on what media, tools, and the technique I want to use in doing the artwork. For this illustration I decided to do a black ink line drawing on smooth vellum paper. The art of Illustration includes the art of making decisions.
