  1. MORREION - A black Ink and gray color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Rhialto the Marvelous," by Jack Vance, published by Brandywyne Books (Underwood-Miller) in 1984.

Motion pictures have finally become a true art form in the hands of some directors and the people they hire to create special effects for their films. Not long ago I sat in a theater, at three different times, to watch, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Peter Jackson adapted and directed the films, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and he did so with an artistry rarely seen in motion pictures.

As I sat watching the first episode it occurred to me that if I stopped the film at any random point so that the screen would show a still picture, it would be a beautiful composition as a great painting. Every scene in the film is stylized and maintains the spirit of the entire epic. Nothing in the film is there unless it fits into that spirit.

Making a motion picture requires the synchronization of many esthetic elements and the creative cooperation of many different but united talents. Very few motion picture makers have been able to assemble the "tools" of his trade and create a motion picture that is a work of art. But Peter Jackson did. And when he did, he became an artist in the truest sense of the word.
