  1. MINOTAURESS - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in a book, "Refugees From An Imaginary Country," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley-Owlswick in 1999.

Evolution occurs because life forms change as time goes by. I have seen animated films showing how man evolved over the millennia from being a blob in the ocean to being the human he is today. Here is one change that happened not too long ago . . .

About 200,000 years ago a band of apes began to get restless; some of them began swaying and grunting in anger, while others began thumping their knuckles against the ground and shrieking, they didn't like this odd looking young male among them who had been born with legs that were not like theirs. They watched as he stood upright and walked towards one of the females. He grasped her by the arm and pulled her out of the cave . . . it was the dawn of mankind . . .

Here is the next step in the evolution of mankind . . . It will take place in the near future, in a hospital delivery room where a human baby is about to be born. The final stage is taking place in the mother's womb; what was normally a dormant section of the human brain has become activated in this baby, and it has been copying the data in it's mother's brain and storing it into its own brain.

The storing is complete, the birthing begins . . .

The baby's father watches the doctor reach in and take the baby out of the mother's womb. It's a girl! As the father moves closer to see his newborn child something "historical" happens; the baby recognizes him, and to the shock and amazement of everyone in the delivery room, the baby smiles and says to him . . . "Hello father".

Actually, the nature of the next step in mankind's evolution is unknown, but it will probably take place in the far future, in deep space, somewhere among the blazing stars . . .
