EVOLUTION

  1. EVOLUTION - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as the "Feature" page in "Galaxy, March 1975".

I was now in my second year as a freelance illustrator and feeling more confident as commissions kept coming in regularly from a variety of fan and pro publishers. For this Galaxy "special," I felt compelled to do something profound, something insightful, something to make a viewer wonder at the meaning behind the drawing.

So I came up with a scene that represents the three eternal basic questions, "who are we? Where are we going? And Why?" Of all the creatures on Earth, and perhaps even in the entire Universe, it may be that only "man," who started out as a form of mud and amoeba, now thinks about those questions. Whoever created us, His "Plan" lies hidden in our DNA.

Whatever His intention, it may involve our destiny. But only Time will tell if mankind is capable of enduring the evolutionary journey that will allow us to share the dream in His plan. These thoughts and this drawing were inspired by Loren Eiseley's lines from his book, "The Innocent Assassins;"

"I that am molded of clay, what am I?
I that am kneaded with water, what is my worth?"
