Approaching Mars

The exploration of space marks the true magnificence of mankind. Not only does it require the application of all the sciences man has developed over the centuries, it demands the courage to face all the dangers threatening him in space as he ventures deeper and deeper into the universe in his quest to reach the stars. Man has that one special characteristic that is necessary for success; "persistence".
Our 30th president, Calvin Coolidge, said, "Nothing in the world can take the place of 'persistence'. Talent will not, the world is filled with unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not, it often goes unrewarded. And Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan, "Press On" has solved, and always will solve the problems of the human race".
Christopher Columbus, on his historic voyage in search of a new route to the Orient, faced a mutiny-minded crew who feared the dangers of the uncharted sea and wanted him to turn back. But he was determined to reach his goal. "Sail On! Sail On!" he persisted, and his courage led to the discovery of America.
Future Columbuses will command starships through the dangerous oceans of space to seek new lands on alien worlds. They will have the same kind of persistence. It is man's destiny.
